Attendees

One of the most important aspects of the salon is the people in the room. We rarely have more than 12 people because a larger group makes it hard to have a full group conversation that is meaningful and also allows all voices to be heard. It is important to carefully select for the following criteria:

Diversity – Do your best to find people across race, class, political affiliations, gender, industry (business people, academics, artists), and age.

Manner – Nothing kills a salon like someone holding court. Make sure you choose people who are focused on being “interested” rather than “interesting”. If they talk too much but are really fascinating and you want to invite them (we understand) make sure you clearly state the ground rules before the salon starts (ie. I can stop and interrupt people) and don’t be afraid to gently steer the conversation away from them if they are talking too long.

Curiosity – Find people who are curious and interested in learning and exploring ideas. Note that this does not necessarily mean they agree with YOUR ideas.

Courtesy - We live in a fast-paced world and people are busy. You want to make sure there is very little attrition on the day of the salon so ask people who you know can commit to showing up and being present.

Honesty - The key to the salon is to get people to share their true and authentic stories. Find people who you think can “go there”. They may be rough around the edges but people willing to share their true and honest selves is key.
